چکیده

The use of a differential game and an optimal control theoretic approach for computing danger zones for this particular problem is new.The space outside thedangerzone is deemed provablysafe, implyingthatduringblunder situations, emergency evasivemaneuvers starting from outside the zone are guaranteed to be safe within limits on themaneuver severity of both the blundering and evading aircraft. In addition, these zones can be computed online in real time with knowledge of the current state. The algorithm also provides the minimum runway spacings for independent approaches and the minimum longitudinal separation between aircraft for dependent approaches. The algorithmfor computingthe zones has been validatedwithoveronemillionsimulationruns, where the adjacent aircraft performed various blunder trajectories. The validation shows that the algorithm could successfully alert and prevent collisions in 100% of the simulations ran.

Flight Demonstration of Provably Safe Closely Spaced Parallel Approaches

In poor visibility, paired approaches to airports with closely spaced parallel runways are not permitted, thus halving the arrival rate. With Global Positioning System technology, datalinks and cockpit displays, this could be averted. One important problem is ensuring safety during a blundered approach by one aircraft. This is on-going research. A danger zone around the blunderer is required. I...

Two Studies of Paired Approaches

At airports with closely-spaced parallel runways, the inability to conduct simultaneous approaches in all weather conditions is a cause of significant delay. One concept for reducing delay is paired approaches, where two airc raft on closely spaced approaches are ‘paired’, and the ‘trail’ aircraft stays within a safe zone relative to the ‘lead’. This positioning guarantees that neither aircraft...

Examining the Feasibility of Paired Closely-spaced Parallel Approaches

‘Paired’ closely-spaced parallel approaches may enable closely-spaced runways to operate at nearvisual capacity in all weather conditions. This concept requires each trail aircraft in the pair to fly in a ‘safe zone’ in front of the lead aircraft’s wake vortex and in back of the lead aircraft’s potential blunder trajectories. This paper examines the position and length of this safe zone to unde...

Pilot Control Behavior in Paired Approaches

A piloted flight simulator study investigated pilot control behavior while self-separating from a proximate aircraft during an instrument landing system approach. This “paired approach” operational concept pairs two aircraft, with the trail aircraft of the pair remaining within a safe zone calculated to be free (for a specified period of time) from collision danger and wake turbulence interacti...

Scheduling Aircraft Landings to Closely Spaced Parallel Runways

An optimization model for a scheduling problem for closely spaced parallel approaches has been formulated. It takes temporal, pairing, sequencing, separation route and grouping constraints into account. Simulations investigated possible advantages of advanced scheduling methods over first-come-firstserved scheduling. Also, this study evaluated the performance differences between the computation...
